Jackson Pathfinders Meeting Minutes
Municipal Building October 15, 2015
Meeting called to order at 7:30pm by Ken Beyer- Chairman.
Attendance: Gayle Baum, Mike Baum, Dan Green, Shari Kondrup, Ken Beyer, Karen Walzer, Barbara Usack, Peggy Sturmfels, Aidan Sturmfels, Stephanie Brown, Jeff Brown, Manny Lindenbaum, Tom Stevens, Pat Stevens
The minutes of the August and September meeting were approved.
Treasurer's report: Karen Walzer: The cost of a new 3 panel display board is between $100- $175. It was felt that we need a new table and hanging banner also. Karen will look into a price for the banners. Dan suggested possibly purchasing a digital frame to display more current pictures at events. Tom Stevens said a new display board was not needed and said a new banner and table cover was more important.
Corresponding Secretary / Membership: Dan Green: Dan sent out a reminder notice for the monthly meeting. He added the new contacts from Jackson Day and the Outdoor Expo.
Website & Facebook: Ken Beyer and Barbara Usack: Ken Beyer, the Pathfinders webmaster, is continuing the work of upgrading the website. Barbara Usack reported the Facebook page has 110 likes.
Forest Resource Education Center (FREC): Rick Dutko: The FREC has new brochures. The Fall Forestry Day was cancelled due to weather. There will be a winter Full Moon Hike on 1/22/16. The Backyard Forestry program continues on the second Thursday of each month at 7pm, registration is through the NJ Forestry Assoc. In addition, there are Saturday programs on the second Saturday of the month.
Bluebird Report: Laura Stone: No report.
Grants: Karen Walzer, Tony Santa Maria, and Tom Stevens: No report
Bunker Hill Bogs: Stephanie Brown volunteered to remind Fred to pick up the garbage.
NJCF Silver Stream Trail: Dan Green and Shari Kondrup are meeting with Bill Scullion to walk the trail. Bill has expressed interest in rerouting the trail from the muddy portions. Tom reminded everyone when the trail was originally blazed it was routed due to complaints from homeowners on Knolls Road. Ken is interested in why Bill wants the trail rerouted. The work day on the trail went well. Ken solicited a donation from Home Depot they donated $50 toward nails and screws. Art Rosky supplied wood for poles and boardwalk repairs. Joe Pepe supplied the use of his quad to bring supplies back to the work site. Blocks were placed to level out the boardwalk and the bridge to the island was straightened. The material for the handrail is in but the work has not been completed. While working on the trail Ken met someone walking the trail with a Pathfinders brochure picked up at the kiosk..
Steve Kitay Living Trail: Matt Sodano a cub scout leader is looking for a community service project. Tom Stevens said he was in contact with Mr. Sodano about possible projects.
New Business: Stephanie Brown is involved in the Garden of Hope Project on Jackson Mills Road. They are looking for local groups to help maintain the garden. Bill Valentine wanted to know if the Pathfinders would be willing to volunteer for the month of August. The motion passed.
Peggy Sturmfels is looking for support from local environmentally active groups to oppose the Great Adventure solar plan.
Chris Claus a naturalist with Ocean County Parks is working on a trail on the Ocean County Lands Trust property across from Patriots Park. He has mapped out an eight mile trail and is looking for help from the Pathfinders.
