Jackson Pathfinders Meeting Minutes

Municipal Building May 21, 2015

Meeting called to order at 7:30pm by Dan Green- Corresponding Secretary.

Attendance: Gayle Baum, Mike Baum, Dan Green, Shari Kondrup, Laura Stone, Stephanie Brown, Pat Stevens

The minutes of the April meeting were approved. Thank you to Laura for doing the minutes.

Treasurer's report: Karen Walzer: No report

Corresponding Secretary / Membership: Dan Green: Dan sent out a reminder notice for the monthly meeting. He added one new contact and deleted two. He also received a thank you note from Alex for our help with his Eagle Scout project

Website & Facebook: Ken Beyer and Barbara Usack: Ken Beyer, the Pathfinders webmaster, is continuing the work of upgrading the website. Barbara reported the Facebook page has 92 likes.

 Forest Resource Education Center (FREC): Rick Dutko: For National Trails Day the FREC will have a guided hike at 10am, we will have members at the Purple Heart Trail and Silver Stream Trails for hikes after the FREC hike. Dan is going to make driving directions to our trails from the FREC. Laura suggested handing out trash bags to people as they enter the trails. The Backyard Forestry program continues on the second Thursday of each month at 7pm, registration is through the NJ Forestry Assoc. The FREC will be starting Saturday programs on the second Saturday of the month in April. They will be having family programs on Thursday mornings in July and August.

Bluebird Report: Laura Stone: Laura stated she has been banding the birds with the help of Alan Jackson. There are 5 nesting pairs, 17 birds have been banded so far. All of the boxes have predator guards. The boxes at Patriot's Park are unsuitable and will need to be replaced.

Grants: Karen Walzer, Tony Santa Maria, and Tom Stevens: No report

Bunker Hill Bogs: The town replaced the broken fence post in the parking lot. Dan suggested a marking and naming for the northern segments of the trail. He suggested each segment have a different color of trail marker to aid hikers. He also suggested identifying signs at the junctions. He stated there is a fallen birch tree on the Northeast route just south of the junction with East Big Loop. Public Works needs to be contacted about removing the large items dumped at the south end of Big East Loop. Ken has installed Pathfinder pamphlets at all the trail kiosks.

NJCF Silver Stream Trail: The chain on the trail was cut by the police due to a non-life threatening medical emergency on the trail. Laura suggested inviting the police and first aid squad to go on a walk of the trail to familiarize them with the terrain. Dan reported we will need 120 plain markers and 20 arrow markers to remark the trail in a single color. The boardwalk and bridge are in need of repair. Ken has reached out to a Boy Scout Troop for help with the repairs. Dan proposed two new trail possibilities an extension of the Metedeconk Island trail and an Inside Passage trail. A deer stand has been found on the trail. We will need a clarification on the NJCF stand on hunting. Dan will be sending out maps of his proposed trails.

Steve Kitay Living Trail: The trail markers are all green now thanks to Bill and Dan.

New Business: The Barnegate Bay Festival is 6/7/15. The consensus is for a table in the big tent for the Outdoor Expo. Stephanie is involved with a new Garden of Hope which will be a memorial for children who have died in the town. The committee is looking for volunteers to help plant but no date is set as yet. She will bring updates as they develop. Ken suggested looking into a possible trail off Indiero Road.
